For people with physical disabilities, making their way across town on public transportation can be a daunting—or seemingly impossible—task to handle alone. On the Move tackles this problem head on, providing people with disabilities the assistance and confidence they need to become more mobile. The program consists of local volunteer networks, with trained volunteers escorting people with disabilities out of their homes and onto public transportation, effectively getting them where they need to go. Volunteers also offer their own vehicles in some cases where public transportation is not a viable option.
On the Move provides a call center that dispatches volunteers to the homes of people in need of transportation assistance. Program staff also hold local workshops to educate people with disabilities about their city’s public transportation and the services offered by On the Move. Everyone should be able to navigate their own communities. And with On the Move, they can.
